LSESU Welcome Week Freshers Fair 2023

South Asia

The LSE South Asian society aims to revive sophisticated discussion of political, historical and philosophical themes by integrating the Eastern and Western intellectual traditions.

Welcome to the LSE South Asian society, a unique society founded in tradition of the Oxford and Cambridge Majlis from the late 19th century. These societies had the opportunity to hold the likes of Gandhi, Jinnah and many other prominent South Asian historical figures, and the LSE South Asian society is a revival of their London counterpart from over 100 years ago.

Here we aim to provide a platform to debate, discuss and engage in cultural exchange in a way that synchronises South Asian, Middle Eastern and Western scholarship to create a truly unique intellectual culture that breaks Eurocentric traditions. Whether its hosting debates with world class speakers, or just between students, we aim to provide a platform for students and public figures alike to come and put forth their views in a way that no other society allows one to do. Coupled with provoking discussions with industry leaders and events to facilitate effective exchange of South Asian and Middle Eastern culture, the society promises to be undoubtedly varied in nature.

In addition to this the society will be publishing its termly magazine, "The Silk Road Press" which welcomes its members to submit and publish articles on history, politics, philosophy, religion and the arts. The magazine will run alongside a fortnightly podcast to grant further depth to the society's work.

Join us as aim to revive the seeking of knowledge and the love of learning. A love of the arts and intellectual dialogue, not simply for the sake of it but for the meaningful exchange of ideas from across the world to shape a better society.
