What is a Student Panel?
A Student Panel is a group of 18-48 students, who are randomly selected to deliberate and make decisions on Policy Proposals.
Like a jury system, we use a sortition process to ensure the students selected reflect the LSE student body and bring in their own lived experience when setting Union-wide policy. This means they have been randomly selected from a pool of volunteers, with adjustments made by algorithm so that the make-up of the panel reflects the demographics of the LSE student body.
These Student Panels are presented with up to six policies to discuss, debate, and ultimately decide whether they should be adopted as Student Union policies. The LSESU would then be obliged to work to deliver that policy until its expiration at the end of the next academic year.
Panellists can also propose amendments to the policy, which includes changing the title, the stated problem, or the stated solution. Any amendments must be passed by a vote of the student panel before the final vote to approve or reject the proposal.
