The Union is committed to fostering a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment at LSE and as project leaders funded by the SUF, you are asked to do the same.
One of your responsibilities as project leader is to reduce barriers to participation for students. Below are practical information to help you plan how to be more inclusive. You can also, on a one off basis, complete an equality impact assessment for your events or projects to ensure you consider how inclusive they are.
Top tips: How to be more inclusive
- Consider the time of day and the day (such as religious holidays or holidays in general) for your projects and events– for Student Parents & Carers, or Students of Faith or Students in different time zones.
- Always consider dietary requirements and run alcohol-free events when possible – for Students of Faith or Culture or Under 18.
- Consider physical accessibility to the space or content, use large fonts and clear communication, make it clear that you accept requests for reasonable adjustments– for Students with disabilities.
- Add your pronouns (They/Them - She/Her- He/Him) whenever possible – for Transgender Students .
- Consider the entry fees of your event and possible alternatives for students facing economic difficulties – for Students with financial difficulties .
- If someone comes to you with an equal access issue/reasonable adjustment ask them what it is they need rather than assume.
- If you are ever unsure on how to make reasonable adjustments for someone, always ask the LSESU team for advice (su.arcstaff@lse.ac.uk).
