Candidate for the position of Disabled Students' Officer
AVELINE SHEK
Inclusion, support, understanding
WHY ME:
- Our experience at LSE is limited by:
- A lack of awareness about disabled students and our needs,
- A lack of urgency to create inclusive spaces and solutions
- And a lack of visibility for disabled students in the eyes of school and departmental management.
- Every student deserves to have the same level of access to educational experiences, whether academic or extra-curricular, not only for an enjoyable and memorable student experience but also for future career trajectories.
- The Student Union's influence among students and on School management means that if elected, I believe we can create real change for all disabled students together.
WHAT I PLAN TO DO:
- Inclusion:
- Work to make sure all departments and societies have inclusive policies
- Maintain an active social media platform for disabled students
- Support:
- Hold fortnightly meetings and have an open Google Form to discuss struggles, tips and suggestions
- Continue the Officer’s work with students and the DWS (Disability and Wellbeing Service) to ensure we are getting the support we need
- Understanding: get conversation about disabled students at LSE through collaboration, on-campus and online
