SUMMER ELGHAWI

Denormalising ‘everyday racism’!

For many individuals, racism is an issue that affects their daily lives, whether on campus, social life, through passive micro aggressions or racial abuse, to them, anti-racism isn't a 'hot topic'.

I want to ensure that there is zero tolerance for racism at LSE, where issues of racial injustice are brought forward and addressed. Increased awareness and education of racism, whether around the globe or within our community. Greater inclusion and protection for POC students.

Racism can no longer be normalised as an 'it happens' issue. It needs to be fought and spoken about.

Initiatives I want to bring forward and commit to:

  • More commitment to having a platform in which students can report racial abuse and discrimination - action needs to actually be taken with these reports.
  • Weekly newsletters that showcase current events happening around the globe and racial injustices to bring light to these issues and educate students on them. These need to be talked about. Silence is complicity.
  • Push for more public support from LSE for social movements; e.g. #StopAsianHate, BLM, Free Palestine, etc.
  • Workshops about anti-racism and how we can do more in our everyday lives to combat injustice. Talks held by scholars of colour that focus on colonialism, racism, orientalist etc.
