About us

Founded in December 2018, the LSESU Marine Society is a place for all who love the ocean. Our mission is to bring the social sciences and the ocean closer together through conservation, environmentalism and fun! Whether you love sailing, surfing, diving, swimming or long walks on the beach, this is the place for you.

Aside from creating a platform for all students and academics passionate and curious about the marine world to come together, discuss and collaborate, our guiding principle is to raise awareness and understanding of the integral role that social sciences play in management and decision making for our global seas and coastline. We aim to foster an active and interdisciplinary student community that contributes to the protection of the oceans through research, adventures, sports and interdisciplinary projects.

We work closely across the University, collaborating with societies ranging from UNSoc to Beekeeping to Fashion Soc - the ocean connects us all, and the same is true of our society.

Membership

Membership allows you to access our varied events throughout the year, including a trial diving session, trips to the beach, movie screenings, pub socials and - most importantly - our annual sailing trip (which we hope will occur in June 2021)!

Events and Activities

Our events are varied and depend on the interests of our members. This year, we had a great interest in environmentalism and how we govern our oceans, so we held speaker events with key ocean activists, launched our Blue New Deal project (about which you can find information on our Facebook page) and close collaboration with Sustainable LSE and other environmental societies.

We also held regular trips to Brighton for beach cleans, a Trial Diving experience at London Diving school (for those interested in qualifying) and had achieved funding to subsidise our annual sailing trip in June.

In a normal week, we'll host pub socials, quiz nights and activist workshops.
